Final friendly match

1-1 against TSV Steinbach

1. FC Köln finished the final friendly match of the preseason with a 1-1 draw against TSV Steinbach. Dominic Maroh scored for FC.

Following a long preseason featuring two training camps in Austria, 1. FC Köln played the final friendly match on Monday night against TSV Steinbach. Several players did not travel for the match, including the injured duo of Yuya Osako and Thomas Kessler.

It took some time for the first goal to fall, but the breakthrough happened in the 44th minute: Dominic Maroh got on the end of a corner from Marcel Risse to put FC up 1-0 at the half. Peter Stöger opted to change his entire eleven to begin the second half. Steinbach soon equalized through Nikola Trkulja, but the real nuisance for FC came in the 58th minute when Jhon Cordoba had to be taken out of the match. Since Stöger had used all of his substitutes, FC had to play the remainder with 10 men.

The match would end in a 1-1 draw, but Stöger was not happy with the way the game was played. Nikolas Nartey had to receive stitches on his hand while Lukas Klünter and Leo Bittencourt also picked up knocks. “It was not what you would call a friendly, but what happened is legitimate. It is football. You can put everything into the match if you think it will bring you success. The question is whether you have to approach a friendly in this way. We now have to look at getting our players fit again,” said Stöger after the match.
