Interview with Marco Höger

“A special match”

Marco Höger made his long-awaited return to the pitch in 1. FC Köln’s 1-0 win against VfL Wolfsburg. The midfielder spoke with about the upcoming DFB-Pokal match against his former team FC Schalke 04. Marco, how nice was it to finally make your comeback?

Marco Höger: “Of course it is nice to make my return in a win and the fact that I was able to contribute right away to our success. I was out for six weeks, so it is not a given that I could play such a major part. Due to our injury situation and the sheer amount of sidelined players, it was important for me to play. That we were able to present three points to our fans in the final home match of the year makes it all the more sweet.”

How difficult was it for you during your spell on the sidelines?

“It is always difficult when all you can do is watch. That even applies to when you are winning. When you add our season run thus far into the equation, it makes it even more bitter that I could not help my team. I am really happy that the injury is behind me now and I hope I do not find myself in a similar situation anytime soon.”

You are one of the more experienced players. How can you help the youngsters in the current situation?

“Obviously, it is not easy to deal with such high pressure situations. But I also happen to think that young players can play a little bit more freely because they do not feel that pressure in comparison to some guys that perhaps already have a few matches under their belt. That is why I think it is a good thing to have these young guys in training. Having said that, it will obviously be good for the team when some of our experienced players return from their respective injuries following the winter break.”

Will the Schalke match be a special match for you?

“Yeah, it is definitely a special match. I spent five years there and that is a long time in professional football. I still know a lot of people that work in and around the Veltins Arena. With regards to the players, there are not that many that I played with because the fluctuation of players at Schalke is quite high in terms of transfers. Nonetheless, it is always nice to return to Schalke.”

Schalke have been playing quite well this season. How difficult will it be to get a result?

“It is always difficult to play there. When you look at their recent run of form, I believe they are full of confidence. I know from personal experience what kind of atmosphere awaits us in a knockout match. We have to brace ourselves. We showed that we are on the right path against Wolfsburg, so we want to build on that.”
