Press conference before FC St. Pauli

Anfang: We’ve got to be at it from the off

On Friday evening, 1. FC Köln host FC St. Pauli at the RheinEnergieSTADION. Before the first home game of the year, head coach, Markus Anfang and managing director, Armin Veh spoke about the upcoming game, the upcoming opponent and the battle for promotion.

Markus Anfang spoke about…

…the squad situation: “Apart from all the long-term injures – Marco Höger, Louis Schaub, Vincent Koziello and Salih Özcan – everyone has trained. Lasse Sobiech has also come back fully into team training this week. He has no problems. Jannes Horn has a few problems, he has the cold and has to do tot he doctors. We don’t know what will happen there. In Berlin we had only 17 players, who were able to play. Jonas Hector is back after his suspension, as well as Lasse Sobiech.”

…the previous defeats: “We didn’t start the games against Bochum and Union well. We have the task, to do that better. It’s important for us that we have the feeling that we can create goalscoring opportunities. But we must also have the feeling, that we can decide games for ourselves. We’ve missed too many chances. We’ve also got to be better in that area. We must start the game well, take our chances and when that happens against St. Pauli, then I’m confident things will go in our favour.”

…the upcoming opponent, FC St. Pauli: “They are very compact. Pauli also have players apart from the likes of Alex Meier, who could also start the game. They always have the option to change things. They have a deep squad with good quality. I can remember the return fixture. We were 2:0 down thanks to some mistakes, even though we could have been winning. Pauli even had the chance to further that lead, then we came back into the game. It was a very intense game and that’s what we’re expecting again. Pauli fight for every centimetre. They’re a team, who come into the game euphoric. We must be at it from the first whistle, and then we can bring our way of playing to the table.”

Armin Veh spoke about…

…the battle for promotion: “The 2. Bundesliga is good this year. You don’t just march through it. That showed itself again in the Pokal, where Heidenheim beat Leverkusen. It’s not without reason that at least three 2. Bundesliga teams will be in the quarter-finals this year. We know that it’s difficult to play in 2. Liga – and also St. Pauli. But we, of course, want to and must win the game at home.”

…Alex Meier, who he previously coached: “If you are as talented as Alex is, then you can still be good with less match practice despite your age. Alex is not just a great footballer, but also a top guy. He is a great player with super character. I wish him only the best – apart from on Friday.”
