Departure from Köln

Anthony Modeste joins BVB

Anthony Modeste has left 1. FC Köln and joined BVB.

1. FC Köln and Borussia Dortmund have agreed terms for the transfer of Anthony Modeste. The striker joins BVB and has signed a one-year deal until 30th June 2023 with the Ruhrpott club.

FC Manging Director, Christian Keller said: “When it comes to Tony, we agreed that we would openly discuss things if there was an interesting offer that came in. In personal discussions in the past week, he made clear his wish to follow up on BVB’s offer. For this reason, we went into talks with BVB and were able to achieve a satisfactory agreement for all involved. Away from that, we know Tony’s value to the team and his engagement for FC. Tony has done a lot for the club. That will remain, should not be forgotten and for that we are very thankful. It is also about accepting the fact that Tony has the chance to play in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in his career. We therefore wish him success, all the best and look forward to seeing him again – whether it be in games against Dortmund or at another time.”

Anthony Modeste said: “Köln will always be my second home – I love the club and the city. FC and Steffen Baumgart, who always believed in me, I’ll always be thankful for the successful time here. Despite that, I have now decided to move on. With the offer from BVB and the age I am, there is a huge opportunity that might not have otherwise come around to play in the Champions League and prove myself at the highest level. I wish FC, the coaching staff and my team-mates all the best for the rest of the season and I am certain that the positive development from last season will continue.”

Anthony Modeste joined 1. FC Köln from TSG Hoffenheim in 2015. Up until his move to Chinese Super League club Tianjin Quanjian (29 games, 16 goals) in summer 2017, he made 73 competitive appearances for FC and scored 45 goals. After his return to Köln in November 2018, it took until February 2019 until the Frenchman was given the right to play by FIFA. In the remainder of the 2018-19 season, Modeste scored six goals in 10 games. 67 appearances in the Bundesliga followed, where he scored a further 24 goals. Overall, Modeste managed 79 goals and 10 assists in 156 games for FC.
