The vote for August's Player of the Month has begun. All FC players who made an appearance over the last month have been nominated.
Starting in Wiesbaden The first competitive game of the season for 1. FC Köln in 2019-20 was a DFB-Pokal tie against SV Wehen Wiesbaden. It wasn't routine, but Achim Beierlorzer's men passed the nerve test. After the game ended 3:3 following extra-time, Timo Horn saved three penalties to put FC in the driving seat. Birger Verstraete converted from the spot to send the team into the second round. Defeat in WolfsburgThe first league fixture under Beierlorzer's watch came in Wolfsburg. FC put in a strong showing, especially in the first-half. Despite a strong start, Maximilian Arnold gave Wolfsburg the lead and Wout Weghorst struck at just the wrong time to double the advantage in the second period. Simon Terodde managed a late consolation, but it was too little, too late in a 2:1 defeat. Impressive performance against DortmundIn the home game against Borussia Dortmund, another stellar first-half was rewarded with a goal and lead at the break. Dominick Drexler's first Bundesliga strike had been the difference between the sides before a late flurry of goals from Dortmund secured the win for Lucien Favre's side. Curse of Freiburg is liftedWhat a game this was. Towards the end of the first half, FC thought they'd gone ahead when Kingsley Schindler lifted over Alexander Schwolow. A VAR decision and two minutes later saw the goal chalked off before Rafael Czichos put through his own goal. However, Achim Beierlorzer's men weren't giving in. Anthony Modeste powered home a header before Ellyes Skhiri went on the dribble of a lifetime to end FC's wait for a win in Freiburg since 1996.
