Midfielder Birger Verstraete has left 1. FC Köln and will return to his home country. FC have agreed on a loan with Royal Antwerp for the coming season and an option to buy at the end of the deal. With the season in Belgium set to start in August, FC will release Birger Verstraete to train with his new club this coming week.
FC managing director Horst Heldt said: “Birger wants to and must play, just like every footballer. We couldn’t make that happen here and then it is better to be honest with one another and find a good solution. We are pleased that worked out and wish Birger the best both in sporting and private terms.”
Birger Verstraete said: “I’m very thankful that I had the chance to get to know the Bundesliga and this special club with its amazing fans. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out this season as all sides had imagined. For me it is important to play again regularly and I see this opportunity in Antwerp. I wish everyone at 1. FC Köln all the best for the future.”
Birger Verstraete moved to Köln in last summer and has made 10 appearances this season. FC thank Birger for his efforts.
