Terodde scores twice

Comfortable victory against Fürth

Saturday afternoon saw a dominant 1. FC Köln record a comfortable 4-0 home win against a harmless SpVgg Greuther Fürth in the RheinEnergieSTADION. FC turned the second half into a goal-festival and earned a very clear win.

Markus Anfang’s men did not give an attacking opportunity for the guests on Saturday and went ahead early on through Dominick Drexler. After the break, the FC attack made their mark and scored through Simon Terodde (twice) and Jhon Cordoba to make it 4-0. With this comfortable victory, 1. FC Köln consolidated second place behind Hamburger SV.

FC in control of the game

Head coach Markus Anfang made no change to the formation or the team which won 3-0 in Darmstadt. Greuther Fürth and Damir Buric made three changes: Richard Magyar, Maximilian Wittek and Maximilian Sauer played for Marco Caligiuri, Lukas Gugganig and Julian Green (all on the bench). With four central defenders in a five-man defence back, the Franconian team began the game very defensively.

1. FC Köln had the first big scoring opportunity of the game. Louis Schaub passed the ball to Simon Terodde, but his shot deflected was saved by Fürth goalkeeper Sascha Burchert for a corner. Three minutes later, a Marcel Risse cross went past all players in front of the goal. After 17 minutes, FC took the lead with the most flowing attack of the first half. Benno Schmitz played the ball into midfield for Louis Schaub, who found Terodde with a superb slide-rule pass. The attacker put the ball across to Dominick Drexler, who slotted home.

In the course of the first half, the guests from Franconia were struggling to get a real chance to score. Instead, the FC attack repeatedly pressed aggressively and created more chances. Within two minutes Burchert had to save well, first against Drexler (25’) and against Terodde (27’). After 37 minutes Drexler narrowly missed a sharp cross in the penalty area. Shortly before the break, Fürth finally started to come forward. They had two chances, both of which were headers, but Timo Horn had no trouble to deal with the danger.

Terodde and Cordoba after the break

As in the last home game against Dresden, FC came out of the dressing room at full steam. Fürth defender Mario Maloca cleared the ball off the line following Marcel Risse’s effort, three minutes after the restart. The following corner produced another chance, as FC captain Marco Höger’s volley was brilliantly saved by Burchert. Immediately thereafter Simon Terodde narrowly missed the Fürth goal. Less than 60 seconds later, Dominick Drexler was sent through the defence with another fine pass from Louis Schaub and pulled down in the penalty box. Referee, Sören Storks immediately pointed to the spot and sent off Maximilian Bauer for a second bookable offence. An ice-cold Simon Terodde converted the penalty to make it 2-0.

The 49,700 spectators in the RheinEnergieSTADION saw nothing but domination from there on out. It was again the outstanding Louis Schaub with a great pass through the defence to Terodde, who was tackled, but Jhon Cordoba picked up the loose ball and managed to poke past Burchert on the hour. FC kept on pushing and scored the final goal of the match after 78 minutes. After a precise cross from Jannes Horn, it was again Simon Terodde, who rose highest and scored his 19th goal of the season with a wonderful header.

The next home game of 1. FC Köln will be played on Monday, December 17th, against 1. FC Magdeburg. Remaining tickets for the game can be found here.
