Achim Beierlorzer’s men made a promising start in Reutlingen, as the sun quickly disappeared behind the clouds and the wind began to blow. Vincent Koziello volleyed wide as Marcel Risse fired over in the opening five minutes. The first attempt on target was from Jhon Cordoba, although Reutlingen ‘keeper, Xaver Pendinger made a fine save from his headed effort.
However, FC didn’t have to wait too long before the breakthrough came. Some hard work on the left from Cordoba saw him win the ball back and that eventually allowed Marcel Risse to cross to the Colombian to nod home the opening goal. A second followed three minutes later, as Cordoba was on hand to fire home the rebound after Niklas Hauptmann’s initial attempt was saved.
Cordoba then rolled in his third from 12 yards. Risse’s cross was handled in the area and Lars Erbst didn’t hesitate in pointing to the spot. Cordoba made no mistake, and sent Pendinger the wrong way. Marcel Risse added a goal to his two assists after the half hour, finishing off a tidy Matthias Bader pass on the right-hand side. Anthony Modeste had two good chances to add to that before the break, but failed to find the target.
The second half saw Achim Beierlorzer continue to make changes as eight new faces arrived onto the pitch at half-time. Despite all the alterations, FC continued to push forward and soon had a fifth goal. That came after a superb run and cross from Noah Katterbach, who managed to find a way to thread a cross along the face of goal. Modeste was ready and waiting, but Ruben Reisig diverted it into his own net.
The remainder of the game saw FC dominate possession, despite being down to 10 men. Kingsley Schindler was forced off with muscular problems, and Beierlorzer’s men played through with a man less. They continued to create chances, but the final pass and finish was missing. Reutlingen managed to find a late consolation goal, after Armin Zukic found a way past Brady Scott. However, that was the last real action of note in the game.
The win is followed by the journey back to Köln for the FC players. Training will resume on Tuesday, before the players head to Lohne for friendly fixtures against VfL Osnabrück and Werder Bremen.
