Matchday 5

Crunching the numbers: Bayern Munich

1. FC Köln haven’t had the best of times of late against Bayern Munich but, traditionally, they are one of the teams that Bayern have trouble against. Here are some stats ahead of the game on Saturday.

Posing problems for Bayern

Of all the current Bundesliga clubs, FC have the third-best record against Bayern. Only against Borussia Dortmund (48%) and Borussia Mönchengladbach (50.5%) have Bayern Munich a worse win rate against than 1. FC Köln.

Since the Allianz Arena has opened, no other team has posed Bayern as many problems as FC. Of all the clubs to have played there five or more times, the hosts have picked up just 16 points. FC are the only side not to have lost one of every two games in the Allianz Arena.

No team has won more Bundesliga games (9) in Munich than 1. FC Köln. Only Borussia Dortmund can match that number.

Tough run

After FC went five games unbeaten against Bayern Munich between 21st February 2009 and 5th February 2011, it’s not been happy hunting since. In the 10 games since, Bayern have won nine and drawn once.

Going back to the 2017-18 season, FC have gone 11 games without a clean sheet in the Bundesliga. The last time a team failed to score against FC was against Bayer Leverkusen, when FC secured a 2:0 win on March 18th.

Super strikers

From active players in the Bundesliga, only Vedad Ibisevic has scored more goals than Robert Lewandowski against FC. The Polish forward has nine goals and two assists in 12 games.

Anthony Modeste has never lost when he has scored against Bayern Munich. Both games were at the Allianz Arena.

Pass perfect (well, almost)

From those players who have more than 90% pass completion, five of those come from FC Bayern – Thiago, Manuel Neuer, Niklas Süle, Joshua Kimmich and Benjamin Pavard – more than any other team.

Reasons to be cheerful

FC have already earned as many points as they did after the first 16 Matchdays of the 2017-18 season.

FC have never lost to Bayern on 21st September. FC have also never played Bayern on 21st September.

Family affair

Achim Beierlorzer’s brother, Bertram, spent five years at Bayern Munich. There, he won five titles and played over 100 times – twice Bundesliga champion, three-time DFB-Pokal winner.
