Uwe Neuhaus made one change from the Arminia team that battled bravely to a 1:1 draw against Frankfurt last week. Nathan de Medina, who was brought off early on in that game, missed out through injury and Cedric Brunner slotted in on the right side of defence.
FC head coach Markus Gisdol made one alteration to the side that were narrowly beaten against TSG Hoffenheim last weekend. Kingsley Ehizibue replaced Marco Höger at right-back, as was the case at half-time during the opening league game.
The game began with both sides trying to figure one another out, as Arminia enjoyed large periods of possession. That came to very little, as Fabian Klos’ deflected header was all Timo Horn had to do in the first 20 minutes. FC’s best opening in the first knockings of the game was through Sebastian Andersson, as the Swede almost connected with Kingsley Ehizibue’s cross.
After the half-hour mark, proceedings began to liven up somewhat. Jannes Horn was required to make an important intervention to deny Ristu Doan, as Sebastiaan Bornauw’s scuffled shot was off target from a corner. Anderson Lucoqui’s effort from 35 yards would be the closest Bielefeld came in the opening half, as Timo Horn was alert to tip the left-back’s drive over the crossbar.
FC had two late opportunities towards the end of the half. Sebastian Andersson almost managed to flick in a strong cross, only for the ball to nick behind for a corner off a Bielefeld defender. The resulting set-piece dropped to Onderj Duda 12 yards from goal, but another Arminia player was in the way as Patrick Ittrich blew for half-time moments later.
The second-half began with a change for FC, as Dominick Drexler came on for Jonas Hector. Jan Thielmann had the first effort on goal after 10 minutes, as he tried his luck from 25 yards. Unfortunately, Stefan Ortega was able to shuffle across and save. There was no real chances of note in the second period, as both sides were defending well – especially from wide areas.
The game looked to be drifting towards a draw until the 79th minute, as a long ball picked out Joan Simun Edmundsson’s run into the area. The Faroe Island forward managed to bring the pass under control and find the near post from a tight angle. Despite some late pressure from FC, an equaliser was not forthcoming and Arminia came away 1:0 winners.
