Terodde scores to make it 2-1

Derby win to start the year

With a passionate performance 1. FC Köln won the 88th Bundesliga Rhine derby against VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach with a score of 2-1 (1-0). Frederik Sorensen had put FC in front, but Raffael equalized in the second half. It was in added time that winter arrival Simon Terodde snatched the important 3 points with a fine header from a Konstantin Rausch cross.

After returning from his long-term injury Germany international Jonas Hector was back in his left back position. Moreover, Simon Zoller teamed up with new arrival Simon Terodde in attack.

Stable FC defense

The beginning of the match was defined by two tactical sides. As a result, neither team could create scoring chances in the opening stages. The only shot on target was an effort by Borussia captain Lars Stindl from an acute angle (13’). In the eventless first 30 minutes, 1. FC Köln only had one remarkable chance by Milos Jojic (27’), but the following corner led to a threatening counter, which Thorgan Hazard hammered against the side-netting.

Sorensen puts FC in front

The FC breakthrough came through a set piece: Jojic swung the ball in from 40 yards and Sorensen popped up free from his marker at the far post to volley the ball over the goal line (34’). This narrow lead was held onto until the break despite a good chance for Patrick Herrmann, who just missed the far post in the closing seconds.

Raffael evens the score

Gladbach coach Dieter Hecking brought on Raffael at the break to strengthen his attack. After the hour mark, Ruthenbeck substituted Clemens in for Zoller and the chances started to come. First, Klünter tested Sommer from an acute angle (63’). Then Thorgan Hazard missed the far post with a dangerous header. Sorensen’s bizarre clearance even resulted in a good delivery to Wendt, who could not slot it home (67’). 2 minutes later substitute Raffael evened the score. The Brazilian hammered the ball against Hector’s head, before levelling on the rebound from 10 yards (69’).

Terodde leaves it late

The match was a real exciter now as the 50,000 supporters saw opportunities at minute intervals. Defender Sorensen just missed the target from another accurate Jojic free kick (71’). Then it was Gladbach captain Stindl, who came close to scoring (74’) and substitute Christian Clemens could not beat Yann Sommer between the Mönchengladbach posts either (75’). In the closing minutes opponent substitute Jonas Hofmann also could not hit Cologne’s goal from a promising position (86’). 1. FC Köln’s passionate performance was finally rewarded in added time when substitute Konstantin Rausch found central forward Simon Terodde in a central position. The new arrival headed the ball finely into the far corner to start the party at the RheinEnergieSTADION.
