Bremen’s Florian Kohfeldt opted for two alterations from Werder’s 1:1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt. Milot Rashica and Ömer Toprak were both given their first starts of the season, as Tahith Chong and Milos Veljkovic were benched.
Markus Gisdol also made two changes from the team that started the game against Bayern Munich last weekend. Dominick Drexler and Noah Katterbach impressed from the bench and were handed a starting spot, with Ellyes Skhiri and Jannes Horn dropping to the bench.
The game was barely a minute old when Timo Horn was forced to make an early save to deny Jean-Manuel Mbom’s effort. FC were defending well against a Bremen side keen to come forward in the opening stages. Marius Wolf had the first chance of the game for Markus Gisdol’s side, only to see Ömer Toprak make an important block from his near-post shot.
Ondrej Duda fired over from the edge of the box whilst Sebastiaan Bornauw made a vital intervention to halt the run of Joshua Sargent into the area. The hosts were dominating the possession but finding it difficult to break down the FC backline. Just before the break, Timo Horn had to be replaced by Ron-Robert Zieler after taking a knock to the hip.
The second-half picked up on the pattern of the play in the first. Sebastian Andersson had FC’s first effort on goal of the evening, yet his header was no trouble for Jiri Pavlenka in the Bremen goal. At the other end, Bornauw made another crucial block to stop Leonardo Bittencourt’s goal-bound shot. However, the breakthrough would finally come as a Ondrej Duda free-kick was turned into his own net at the back post by Niklas Moisander.
FC were staying steady at the back up until the 82nd minute, as Sebastiaan Bornauw handled a Tahith Chong cross. Florian Badstübner pointed to the spot and it was former FC midfielder, Leonardo Bittencourt who sent Ron-Robert Zieler the wrong way. There were no further chances in the game, as it petered out for a draw. FC are next in action on Sunday 22nd November against 1. FC Union Berlin.
