Steffen Baumgart stayed true to his word and continued to make changes to allow the entire squad to get some game time in their legs. All four new summer arrivals were in the line-up against Duisburg, with FC fans getting a first glimpse of Marvin Schwäbe in goal. Tomas Ostrak and Niklas Hauptmann also started after their loans last season.
The game was closely fought from the beginning and saw both sides doing their best to make early inroads. Despite the efforts of the two teams, there was little in the way of clear-cut chances. Duisburg were more than holding their own in the opening stages, with Pavel Dotchev’s side keen to press high and early against FC.
Duisburg came the closest to opening the scoring in the first-half, as Marvin Ajani’s cross to the back post was hammered against the frame of the goal by Moritz Stoppelkamp. FC responded with an effort of their own. Mark Uth managed to get space in the box to fire off a low drive, yet Leo Winkauf got down well and managed to parry the ball to safety.
Steffen Baumgart made six changes at the break as Meiko Sponsel, Jorge Meré, Salih Özcan, Dimitris Limnios, Vincent Koziello and Anthony Modeste came off the bench. The game was still tight and closely fought, however. Marvin Schwäbe had to be alert to make two strong stops with his legs to keep out the advances of the home side.
It would be two of the substitutes who combined to give FC the lead in Duisburg. Meiko Sponsel broke away down the right-hand side and drilled a low cross towards the penalty spot. Anthony Modeste was ready and waiting, and he fired home an excellent first-time finish to break the deadlock in style.
It looked like FC would be headed for a second win in as many days, only for Moritz Stoppelkamp to grab a late equaliser for the home side. Another few days of training of Geißbockheim will follow before heading to Donaueschingen for the training camp on 16th July. A day later, FC take on Bayern Munich in Villingen-Schwenningen.
