Thoughts after Augsburg

Drexler: “The fans pushed us on”

After the battling 1:1 draw against Augsburg, NetCologne FC-TV spoke with Dominick Drexler, Benno Schmitz and Markus Gisdol.

Dominick Drexler: “You seen that we absolutely wanted to win the game in the second half. The fans were with us every step and seen that we put in everything. The way the game went in the first half, that was unfortunate for us. The red card and the goal we conceded. We then tried to throw everything at it for the second half. In the end, the point is deserved, but we also would have liked to take all three to improve how the table looks. The automatisms aren’t quite there, but we’re trying to work through that. The boss set us up well, we were compact in the middle. In the first-half, we had a few situations where we could have been a bit more self confidence. The fans really pushed us on and we were able to give something back in the second half.”

Benno Schmitz: “It was a battling game, with lots of niggles, yellow cards and breaks in play that played their part to the overall match. After the red card, we immediately went 1:0 down but the red card for Augsburg gave us hope again. We played a good second half, had a lot of chances and must see to it that we equalise sooner – then we could have maybe won the game. In the relegation battle, every point counts. We would have liked to have won, but we’ll take the point.”

Markus Gisdol: “The point does us good. And it was more than deserved when you look at how we played in the second half. The team had to cope with a lot in the first half. I think we started the game decently, but then had the penalty and also an unnecessary goal right before half-time. We then managed to correct one or two things at the break and bring the team back into line. As time went on in the second half, I had the feeling that the chance would come. The chances did come and thankfully we were able to take one. From our situation, you only come out of it when you give absolutely everything for your kit, your club, your team and for yourself week after week. The support from the fans helped the team. That’s what we need.”
