FC defender

Ehizibue: “We believe we can do it”

Sunday was a mixed bag for Kingsley Ehizibue. After a solid first-half performance, the defender had to go off after a nasty clash of heads on what was his 50th appearance for 1. FC Köln. A few days on from the defeat to Mainz, Ehizibue is concentrating on the final few games of the season.

How are you? How is your head? What do you remember from the clash happening?

“I’m doing well. I had some headaches for a couple of days afterwards. But my head now feels a lot better. I know that I went for the ball and I didn’t see the guy coming in. The only thing I didn’t remember was how I went to the ground, but I then had my face on the ground. The team looked after me really well.”

It was your 50th game for FC at the weekend. Even when the result wasn’t positive, how proud are you to have made 50 appearances for the club?

“I’m grateful that I have been able to make 50 appearances for the club. I’m thankful that I came here and that the club has trusted in me. I’m really proud of achieving that. It’s nice to be up there with Sunday Oliseh and Anthony Ujah as the only Nigerians to play 50 games for the team. Unfortunately, the result didn’t go our way. That’s not what we expected or what we wanted to happen.”

It’s been a difficult couple of weeks recently – how do you see the situation going into the final six games?

“I am positive about our chances. I think that we are going to make it. We have to live day by day, match by match. The group and the team aren’t giving up. There is no-one here who is giving up. The new head coach wants to work hard and give everything, and that’s what we want to do as well. You can feel that he believes in us and I think everyone has that hope required to stay in the league. It’s not going to be easy; it never was going to be easy.”

How are the team looking to turn things around against Leverkusen?

“It was a tough loss earlier in the season. We have a match against Leverkusen now and anything can happen in games between local rivals. They’re a good team with quick players but it’s a chance to get back on track. Everyone wants to put the record straight after we lost to them. There is also that desire from the Mainz result to do things better. We have to stick together because we all want to win and stay in the league. That is the only thing on our mind.”

What are your first impressions of the new manager?

“At the meeting he had with us, he got everyone together and explained what he wants to do and what he wants from us. He was very positive in what he was saying. He is very direct and has authority, and I respect him a lot for that. He also shows us the respect back to us. It is a good start and we want to use that.”
