Tunis Afrique Presse have crowned Ellyes Skhiri as Tunisia’s Footballer of the Year for 2021. The midfielder received 607 points in the voting. Saint Etienne’s Wahbi Khazri (483) came in second, with El Ahly’s Ali Maaloul (441) finished third. It is the first individual award of Skhiri’s career.
Ellyes Skhiri said: “It is a huge honour for me. I haven’t won any trophies in my career so far, so I am very happy about it. The award is confirmation for me, for my performances and my hard work. I am thankful to those who voted for me. I will continue to give my best, just like I always have done.”
Skhiri made 34 competitive appearances for FC in 2021, scoring seven goals and setting up a further three. The Tunisian international featured eight times for his country, scoring three times including a stunning long-range strike against Mauritania. His tireless work in a defensive sense has earned plenty of plaudits and has now been rewarded. Along with the African Cup of Nations this month, Skhiri and Tunisia are battling for a place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
