Ruthenbeck on Gladbach

“Everyone is highly motivated”

1. FC Köln will begin the second half of the season on Sunday against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Stefan Ruthenbeck spoke ahead of the upcoming derby.

FC head coach Stefan Ruthenbeck spoke on Friday’s press conference about…

  • …his excitement: “Obviously it is something special. Borussia Mönchengladbach, derby, and it is the first match of the year. Everyone is highly motivated and we are excited for the match.”
  • …his squad: “Jannes Horn is looking better, but you can still tell that the flu hit him hard. I think he has put it past him but I think this match comes too soon for him. Yuya Osako had a good training session and you can tell that his strength is returning to him. Konstantin Rausch was also able to take part in all aspects of training.”
  • …the meaning of his first derby: “I have played some derbys with Greuther Fürth against Nuremberg. It is the oldest derby in Germany, so I would not say I am totally inexperienced. However, I will surely get goosebumps when I enter the stadium on Sunday as the head coach of 1. FC Köln in a derby against Borussia Mönchengladbach. It is truly special.”
  • …the opponent: “We are facing a very good football team that is particularly strong in its playmaking abilities. They are very effective in attack. We will have to focus on working against the ball and defending solidly.”
  • ...new impressions from his team: “We saw at the tournament in Bielefeld that we are capable of playing multiple defensive styles and that we are capable of holding the opponent scoreless. I think our defensive line is above average and we have a good goalkeeper. In Simon Terodde we picked up a guy that works well against the ball and has his own ideas when in possession. We have a clear idea of how we want to approach this match and if we are capable of implementing our system, it will be difficult for Gladbach to beat us.”
