3:2 friendly win

FC beat Bayern

1. FC Köln remain unbeaten in pre-season thanks to a 3:2 win over FC Bayern Munich on Saturday evening. Jan Thielmann and Mark Uth’s double managed to cancel out Bayern goals from Armindo Sieb and Joshua Zirkzee to secure the victory.

Four first-half goals

The game began with an early goal that would set the tone for the rest of the first-half. After FC failed to clear the ball following a corner, Armindo Sieb hammered the ball past the helpless Timo Horn from 12 yards. FC didn’t let the goal effect the mood too much, however. A fine pass from Jonas Hector sprung the Bayern offside trap and Jan Thielmann stayed cool to slot past Sven Ulreich.

Steffen Baumgart’s side took heart from that goal and went in search of another. After some promising attacks, Thielmann turned provider to cross for Mark Uth. The returning forward twisted and turned to produce a twisting, turning and acrobatic volley from six yards. However, Bayern managed to get back level before the break. Taylor Booth teed up Joshua Zirkzee for the equaliser.

Uth with the winner

There were changes at half-time for both sides, as Bayern brought on all the remaining players left on the bench. Steffen Baumgart opted for three subs, as Benno Schmitz, Jens Castrop and Tim Lemperle came on. Michael Cuisance and Mark Uth went close earl on. However, it was the latter who would get his name on the scoresheet. An excellent cross from Florian Kainz saw Uth head home unmarked.

FC didn’t look back from their third goal and continued to cause problems for Bayern. Tim Lemperle was denied by the legs of Ron-Thorben Hoffmann, who had to be alert to make a similar save from Kingsley Schindler moments later. Sebastian Andersson, making his first appearance in pre-season alongside Ellyes Skhiri, headed narrowly wide in what was a phase of real pressure.

The game was end-to-end in the latter stages, with tired legs telling a tale in forward areas. Steffen Baumgart’s side have no time to rest, however. Tomorrow at 17:00 CEST, FC take on FC Schaffhausen. The game will be live on YouTube and Facebook.
