1:2 defeat

FC beaten by Darmstadt

1. FC Köln fell to a 1:2 defeat to SV Darmstadt 98 on Friday evening at the RheinEnergieSTADION. Jhon Cordoba had levelled the scores after Serdar Dursun’s opener, only for Felix Platte to strike 10 minutes later to win the game.

Markus Anfang made three chances to the starting line-up that lost in Dresden on Sunday. Vincent Koziello, Christian Clemens and Jhon Cordoba returned to the side as Louis Schaub dropped to the bench and Florian Kainz (suspension) and Anthony Modeste (injury) missed out.

Darmstadt and Dimitrios Grammozis, on the other hand, opted for two alterations after drawing 0:0 with his former side, VfL Bochum last week. Mathias Wittek returned to central defence as Tobias Kempe dropped to the bench, and Marvin Mehlem replaced Joevin Jones on the left.

Dursun opens scoring

The game began at a furious pace and the first 15 minutes were filled with chances at both ends. While Darmstadt looked to break through Marcel Heller and felt that they should have had a foul as he went through, FC were the more dangerous side. Simon Terodde tested Daniel Heuer Fernandes’ reactions from close range and the German-Portuguese stopper pulled off another fine stop from Dominick Drexler’s low drive.

That tempo didn’t hold and the game gradually became more even. Christian Clemens was forced off with injury after half an hour, as he took a nasty bang on the leg following a full-blooded challenge with Fabian Holland. Benno Schmitz had barely come on before FC found themselves behind, as Fabian Holland volleyed the ball to the back post for Serdar Dursun to head home.

Markus Anfang’s men responded immediately and almost found a way back into the game. Simon Terodde headed wide before a slick slide-rule pass from Dominick Drexler put him through on goal again, only to see Daniel Heuer Fernandes charge out and save well. Drexler then had a header of his own cleared off the line, as FC went into the break a goal behind.

Cordoba levels, Platte makes it 1:2

After the break, FC attacked the game with renewed verve. Unfortunately, Darmstadt were just as determined to keep out the home side. Backed by a sold-out stadium, Vincent Koziello had an excellent chance blocked before the ball fell to Jonas Hector. However, the FC captain saw a defiant clearance shovelled over the bar by the desperate Darmstadt defence.

Daniel Heuer Fernandes was proving himself to be a worthy adversary for FC on the day, and continued to pull off important save after important save. He denied Louis Schaub and then Simon Terodde in quick succession, but failed to keep out Jhon Cordoba. The Colombian rose highest to meet Dominick Drexler’s pin-point cross to deservedly bring FC back on level terms.

Just as it looked like the tide had finally turned, Darmstadt struck again. Marco Höger and Rafael Czichos were unable to clear a long ball upfield, and Felix Platte was free on goal. He managed to round Timo Horn and despite Czichos’ efforts to get back and clear, the ball trickled into the empty net. FC attempted to mount a fightback, but Daniel Heuer Fernandes’ continued to thwart every attack.

FC now have to wait until next Monday to play again, when they make the trip to Franconia to face SpVgg Greuther Fürth.
