Defeat to Leipzig

FC beaten by Leipzig

1. FC Köln fell to a 4:2 defeat against RB Leipzig on Monday evening at the RheinEnergieSTADION. Jhon Cordoba put FC ahead before goals from Patrick Schick, Christopher Nkunku and Timo Werner. Anthony Modeste's stunner gave FC hope before Dani Olmo added Leipzig's fourth.

Team news

Markus Gisdol made four changes from the FC side that lost against Hoffenheim on Wednesday. Rafael Czichos, Noah Katterbach, Jonas Hector and Florian Kainz came in for Sebastiaan Bornauw (suspended), Kingsley Ehizibue, Dominick Drexler (both bench) and Mark Uth (injured).

As for Julian Nagelsmann, he opted for two alterations to the Leipzig team that drew 2:2 with Hertha BSC during the week. Nordi Mukiele and Angelino replaced Tyler Adams (bench) and Marcel Halstenberg (suspended).

Leipzig ahead at half-time

The game took no time at all to get going. A fine move from Leipzig saw Timo Werner with the chance to open the scoring, though Timo Horn made a fine save with his foot. FC would, however, take the lead. Florian Kainz’s superb pass to Elvis Rexhbecaj saw the midfielder hit the post from a tight angle, but Jhon Cordoba was on hand to fire home for his 12th goal of the season.

Cordoba had a chance to double his tally, only to head straight at Peter Gulacsi. However, Leipzig came more and more into the contest and were able to equalise after 20 minutes. Angelino picked out Patrick Schick in the middle, and the Czech forward powered a header back into the far corner. Unfortunately not long after, Cordoba had to come off after a clash with Dayot Upamecano.

The visitors continued to have more of the ball and Schick had another headed chance, though headed well over Timo Horn’s goal. The game looked to be headed to half-time all-square, but Leipzig managed to turn things in their favour. Konrad Laimer managed to feed Christopher Nkunku, and he ran through to lob Horn and hand Leipzig the advantage before the break.

Goals galore

The second-half began completely opposite to the first, as FC conceded a third five minutes in. Peter Gulacsi’s long kick forward found Timo Werner completely alone. The forward ran through unopposed to slot in. However, Anthony Modeste gave Markus Gisdol’s men a lifeline with a stunning 25 yard strike into the far corner past the outstretched Gulacsi.

Yet the goals would continue to fall. Just two minutes later, a corner was cleared only as far as Dani Olmo and he was able to pick his spot and restore Leipzig’s two-goal cushion. FC continued to come forward which allowed the visitors room, with Horn doing well to save from Werner before Patrick Schick headed over.

The remainder of the game saw both sides go back and forward but without a further goal to show for the efforts of either team. FC were awarded a penalty before VAR intervened, while Timo Horn made two smart saves from Marcel Sabitzer. Markus Gisdol’s men are next in action against FC Augsburg on Sunday.
