FC began the game in Eindhoven brightly. Marcel Risse picked out Simon Terodde when through on goal, but his touch took the ball behind for a goal-kick. Moments later, Terodde did superbly well to keep a deep Niklas Hauptmann pass in play. Unfortunately, for Achim Beierlorzer’s men, the pass was a tick too far ahead of the oncoming Matthias Bader.
Shots from Dominick Drexler and Kingsley Schindler followed, but were of little concern to Robbin Ruiter in the PSV goal. The hosts’ first chance came as Konstantinos Mitroglou broke through on goal, though Thomas Kessler closed the angle well and made a smart save with his foot.
FC were also dominant in the final stages of the first-half. Ruiter was alert in the PSV goal to deny a low drive from Vincent Koziello, before an even better stop kept out Lasse Sobiech’s point-blank header. Ruiter continued to thwart FC and after a mazy run and pass from Niklas Hauptmann, Kingsley Schindler’s effort from close range was saved.
The second half began with both sides somewhat disjointed with the changes that occurred during the break. FC brought on both Birger Verstraete and Jan Thielmann at the restart, as the pair injected fresh legs after a strong pressing performance in the first 45. However, PSV came out determined to make good on a slow opening period and forced a fine early save from Thomas Kessler.
PSV’s early dominance saw them find the lead midway through the second half. A quick break away count FC off guard and Bruma led the charge through the middle. He managed to pick out Mitroglou on the right, and he stayed calm to beat Kessler from 12 yards.
A second set of changes saw FC come back into their rhythm. Oliver Schmitt was denied by a strong stop by Lars Unnerstall as the pressure ramped up a notch. Jan Thielmann almost connected with a corner before volleying over the ball, while Simon Terodde watched on as his low drive was rolled across the face of goal thanks to the studs on Unnerstall’s boot.
