3:2 defeat

FC beaten in Pokal by Saarbrücken

1. FC Köln fell to defeat against 1. FC Saarbrücken on Tuesday evening in the DFB-Pokal. After falling 2:0 behind, it looked like Jonas Hector and Simon Terodde had rescued the tie before Tobias Jänicke’s late strike won it for the hosts.

Team news

Dirk Lottner opted for two alterations following the 5:0 thumping against Kickers Offenbach at the weekend. Mario Müller and Fabian Eisele dropped to the bench as Fanol Perdedaj and Jose Pierre Vunguidica earned starting berths.

Achim Beierlorzer made six changes from the FC side that were beaten by Mainz on Friday. Kingsley Ehizibue, Rafael Czichos, Kingsley Schindler, Louis Schaub, Florian Kainz and Simon Terodde were replaced by Benno Schmitz, Jorge Meré, Marcel Risse, Dominick Drexler, Anthony Modeste and Jhon Cordoba.

Stalemate at the break

Saarbrücken were keen to get going from the very start and Gillian Jurcher’s early shot was the first sign of intent from Lottner’s side. Jonas Hector picked up an early booking for a late tackle in front of the former FC player, as the opening 10 minutes proved to be a competitive and battling period to open the game.

FC’s first chance of the match came after a quarter of an hour. A fine through ball from Dominick Drexler picked out the run of Jhon Cordoba, but Daniel Batz spread himself well to make an important save. As the game went on, Achim Beierlorzer’s men were enjoying more of the ball but the organised Saarbrücken defence was proving a tough nut to crack.

The end of the half was, however, eventful. A flowing move from FC saw Hector find Anthony Modeste, and he picked out Dominick Drexler. Unfortunately, for FC, Batz was again on hand to produce a fine save. Timo Horn was not to be outdone, and tipped a powerful Jurcher drive around the post as the two teams went in level at the break.

FC lose it late on

Beierlorzer opted to bring on Louis Schaub for Anthony Modeste at the break, but it was almost FC who were behind. As Jose Pierre Vunguidica’s shot was well saved by Horn, Jurcher cut back for Sebastian Jacob in the middle. Jacob, who grabbed a hat-trick at the weekend, fired over the bar while face with an open net. Schaub then showed what he can do, but his finish couldn’t match.

Despite FC beginning to see more of the ball, Saarbrücken opened the scoring. A flat free-kick in a dangerous area was sent into the box and Christopher Schorch rose highest to send the ball past Timo Horn. Things went from bad to worse for FC three minutes later, when Gillian Jurcher rounded Horn after a long ball to slot into an empty net.

FC set about trying to fashion a reply against a Saarbrücken side that were sitting further and further back towards their own penalty area. A response did finally arrive when Noah Katterbach went on a mazy run and cut inside from the left. His cross was perfect for Jonas Hector, who placed the ball firmly into the right-hand corner.

As Saarbrücken dropped even deeper, FC continued to press and found an equaliser. Kingsley Schindler set Jhon Cordoba on the break, and Simon Terodde managed to curl one past Daniel Batz to finally set things right. The game looked to be heading for extra-time, but Tobias Jänicke fired home in the final minute of normal time to complete a memorable night for the hosts.
