3:0 win over Paderborn

FC earn first home win

1. FC Köln earned their first home win of the 2019-20 Bundesliga season on Sunday afternoon. Simon Terodde opened the scoring early on before Louis Schaub’s header and another from Sebastiaan Bornauw crowned a fine performance at the RheinEnergieSTADION.

Team news

Achim Beierlorzer opted for an unchanged starting eleven from the side that managed to earn a deserved draw in Gelsenkirchen before the international break. It was the first time this season that Beierlorzer had chosen the same team in consecutive weeks.

As for Steffen Baumgart, the Paderborn head coach made two changes following the defeat against Mainz. Gerrit Holtmann and Babacar Gueye both came into the starting line-up, with Jamilu Collins absent and Sven Michel taking a place on the bench.

Terodde taps in

FC began brightly and almost had the opener inside two minutes. A fantastic corner from Louis Schaub was met by the oncoming Jonas Hector, but his header was narrowly over the crossbar. Kingsley Ehizibue also had an early effort blocked but the press would tell. Simon Terodde tapped home after Leopold Zingerle spilled the ball in front of the FC striker. Despite the original celebrations being cut short, a three-minute VAR wait meant that FC were able to move into the lead.

Terodde had a chance to double his account, but the header from Florian Kainz’s pin-point cross was narrowly over the bar. Louis Schaub was orchestrating play in the middle and was proving a constant headache for Paderborn defence, as he continued to find space behind defence and midfield.

Simon Terodde continued to be a thorn in the Paderborn side and he almost made it two once more. Unsurprisingly, Schaub was at the heart of the move once again before Florian Kainz managed to keep the ball in play. Unfortunately for FC, the cross was a tick too far behind Terodde and he couldn’t quite convert. Sebastiaan Bornauw and Rafael Czichos took care of things at the back as FC went into the break with the lead.

Super Schaub, brilliant Bornauw

FC began the second-half as the first ended, with plenty of attacking intent. Simon Terodde was played through beautifully by Louis Schaub, but his cutback for Kingsley Schindler was cut out at the last moment. Schaub then had a shot of his own from the angle, which Zingerle gathered at the second attempt. Timo Horn was called into action for the first time, and did well to turn Gerrit Holtmann’s low effort round the post.

Despite Paderborn’s pressure, FC were still in control and with the visitors pushing forward more and more. It looked like a counter would be key, and that was the case. Kingsley Schindler set off down the right and produced a great cross to the back post. Louis Schaub was ready and waiting and deservedly got on the scoresheet himself. It could have been even better five minutes later, but Schindler’s effort from 12 yards failed to nestle inside the far post.

Schindler wanted to get his first Bundesliga and almost did just that, only for Zingerle to hang onto his effort from the edge of the area. At the other end, Rafael Czichos made a vital bock tackle to prevent Sven Michel from going through on goal. After Jhon Cordoba hit the post, it looked like FC wouldn’t add the icing on top of the cake. However, Sebastiaan Bornauw rose highest to head home from Marcel Risse’s corner to seal the win.

It is a short week for 1. FC Köln, who travel to 1. FSV Mainz 05 on Friday evening in another important clash.
