1. FC Köln and Steffen Baumgart will continue their successful work together. The FC head coach has extended his contract that was previously dated to 30th June 2024 – as agreed upon in the previous campaign – for a further year until 30th June 2025.
Steffen Baumgart said: “In the past year, we made a clear statement: if things are working out for all parties involved, the contract will be extended for a further year. Anything else was out of the question. Why? Simply because it’s fun here, to work with my team and for FC. You can see that every day. We always spoke about a journey, and I am convinced that it is not yet over. We can still achieve a lot here.”
FC Managing Director, Christian Keller said: “Our development as a whole speaks for itself. Steffen and his coaching staff are working with consequence and systematically along a clear philosophy. Many players have enjoyed a positive personal development as a result. With his clear signature, Steffen has formed a strong collective where a large amount of togetherness and team spirit can be found. All of these points speak in favour of continuing our work with Steffen, regardless of the sporting results that we have achieved. Therefore, it is only correct that we, as agreed upon in summer, extend the contract. I’m very happy.”
Steffen Baumgart agreed to join 1. FC Köln in May 2021. In his first season as head coach, he and his coaching staff led FC to seventh place in the Bundesliga and qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League Play-offs. After successfully securing the Group Stage with the win against Fehervar, FC narrowly missed out on a place in the knockouts after games against OGC Nice, Partizan Belgrade and 1. FC Slovacko. Thanks to the win against Bayer Leverkusen on Friday, 1. FC Köln secured their Bundesliga status for the 2023-24 season and the fifth season in a row. The first time the club have achieved that feat since the first relegation from the Bundesliga in 1998.
