1. FC Köln and under-19 head coach, Stefan Ruthenbeck have agreed on a contract extension that removes the end date in Ruthenbeck’s contract. Many FC players, including Ismail Jakobs, Noah Katterbach, Jan Thielmann and Sava-Arangel Cestic, have been helped on their journey to the Bundesliga by Ruthenbeck. In the past season, the 48-year-old led the under-19s to the West German championship and, for the first time in club history, the UEFA Youth League.
“The people that I am able to work with at FC have prompted me to extend my contract. I’m very pleased about the trust of those who are in charge here. The high amount of players who make it into the under-21s and to the first-team is for us youth coaches a great reward. It makes my heart smile,” said Stefan Ruthenbeck.
“We can give the boys a lot of things going forward as they become adults, things that are important in football and in life. It’s just about the footballing side but also about developing the players personally. It is great to see that the lads from the under-19 make it into professional football, that they can also handle themselves well and that the contact to them never disappears. I’m looking forward to developing our youngsters in the coming years so that they are prepared for the rigours of professional football and can make it in the first-team. With our work, we want to do our bit to make sure that 1. FC Köln are as successful as possible,” said the under-19 head coach.
“We are absolutely convinced that, in Stefan, we have the right man in the right job. He knows how the young players tick and, at the same time, knows what the expectations of the first-team are for our youth players,” said Matthias Heidrich and Carsten Schiel, the two heads of the youth academy.
“Our wish, to remove the end date in his contract, was met with full approval from the Managing Directors. This huge trust comes from both sides and further confirms how much we value Stefan’s work, which has an added value for the entire club. His work is inspiring for all the young coaches at the club. The entire academy and first-team benefit from his manner, his charisma and his expertise. We are happy to be heading into the future with him,” said Heidrich and Schiel.
Stefan Ruthenbeck joined 1. FC Köln as the under-19 head coach for the 2017-18 season. In December 2017, he took over the first-team on an interim basis until the summer of 2018. Since then, he has continued in his role with the under-19s.
