0-0 against Bremen

FC fight for point

1. FC Köln put on a brave display at the RheinEnergieSTADION on Sunday against SV Werder Bremen. Despite several chances to win it, the match ended in a scoreless draw (0-0).

Peter Stöger had to replace the injured duo of Marco Höger and Matthias Lehmann. Leo Bittencourt and Sehrou Guirassy (for Clemens) were brought on as starters, which meant that Milos Jojic teamed up with youngster Salih Özcan in central midfield.

Chances for Guirassy

FC started with 2 early heading chances for Guirassy, who at first could not hit the target from the 6-yard line after a well-timed Osako delivery (6’) and then was denied by Pavlenka from the same position (8’). The French striker was a permanent threat to the Werder defense and tested Pavlenka again in the 14th minute.

No goals at halftime

The 2 sides neutralized each other in midfield for much of the match. 28 minutes into the match, Junuzovic had the first opportunity for the visitors, but headed the ball wide of the left post. Still, FC were the more dangerous team but Pavlenka could not be beaten by Guirassy (33’), Jojic (37’) and Osako (39’). Thus, the first half remained goalless.

Stable defenses

The second half started with the best chance for Werder: Maximilian Eggestein received the ball in the box but mishit the volley with his left foot (49’). 5 minutes later Pavlenka had to fist away a Bittencourt effort from 19 yards. After that both teams defended with discipline and could not create any scoring chances for quite a while.

Turbulent remainder

In the closing minutes FC were determined to snatch the first victory of the season. Stöger had brought on an additional striker: Frederik Sorensen. However, it was Guirassy again who could not score. First he missed the empty goal from within the 6-yard box (87’) and the he could not beat Pavlenka from the edge of the box (89’). Just before the final whistle Kocka Rausch saved his team by clearing a Delaney header off the line in added time.
