FC Frauen sign Lena Lotzen

1. FC Köln Frauen have signed a European champion. Lena Lotzen will join FC next season from SC Freiburg. She has signed a contract valid for both leagues until summer 2022.

After Sharon Beck’s arrival, another huge transfer for FC Frauen. The former German international, Lena Lotzen will join 1. FC Köln on a free transfer. The 26-year-old featured for all of the national youth teams and featured 25 times for the German first-team, scoring four goals.

Lotzen was part of the Euro 2013 winning side, has won the Frauen-Bundesliga twice, DFB-Pokal once and was singled out as the best women’s youth player in 2012 with the Fritz-Walter-Medal. At 16, she made her debut with Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and spent eight years there. In 2018, Lotzen made the move to SC Freiburg. Overall, the has scored 26 goals in 95 Frauen-Bundesliga games.

Nicole Bender, sporting director of FC-Frauen, said: “From the very start, Lena had everyone at 1. FC Köln convinced. Footballing ability was never in question, but also with her manner. Lena has worked hard to have a big name in women’s football. She belongs to the best midfielders in Germany. We are very happy, that Lena has decided to join us and she’ll bring our squad to another level.”

Lena Lotzen said: “I had great talks with those responsible at FC Frauen and I’m really excited about the path that I was shown. Therefore, I’ll also go with the team into 2. Bundesliga, if that is the case. I’m pleased to be able to do my part to bring FC Frauen further up the table in the coming years.”

Sascha Glass, head coach of FC Frauen, added: “Lena is, both from a sporting and people perspective, a top transfer for us. She is flexible in midfield but can also play up front. In the previous years, she hasn’t had much luck with injury, but has come back strongly from that phase. I’m sure that she won’t just help us on the pitch, but also with her strong personality off it.”
