Matchday 1

FC Frauen travel to Essen

1. FC Köln Frauen are back in the Bundesliga and hoping to break the circle of promotion and relegation. After Sascha Glass’ side fought their way back to the top-flight, the one and only goal is to be above the dropzone in May.

Pokal progression after promising pre-season

After a tough few weeks preparing for the new campaign, 1. FC Köln started the 2021-22 season with a 7:0 win over TSG Lütter at the weekend. Mandy Islacker scored twice, with Peggy Kuznik, Sharon Beck Eunice Beckmann, Ally Gudorf and Amber Barrett also on the scoresheet in an impressive start to the campaign.

FC Frauen went through the pre-season losing just one game, which was against PSV Eindhoven in a narrow 3:2 defeat. The most notable result included the 3:3 draw against Dutch champions, FC Twente as Sascha Glass’ side battled back from 3:1 down in the last five minutes.

New faces

There are plenty of new faces in the squad ahead of Saturday’s fixture. Elvira Herzog has returned from SC Freiburg after a year away, with Jana Beuschlein, Myrthe Moorrees and Laura Donnhauser also bolstering the ranks. Polish duo Adriana Achcinska and Weronika Zawistowska have arrived from Poland, with the latter joining on loan from Bayern Munich.

The game takes on special meaning for two new signings in particular. Irini Ioannidou and Manjou Wilde will both take on their former club at the weekend. The pair made over 275 appearances for Essen and will return to Stadion Essen on Matchday 1.

Glass: “We want to be brave”

Mandy Islacker will also return to her birthplace, with the Essen-born striker eager to get started: “We are all looking forward to our game in Essen. The first game is always something special. We will do everything to make sure we start well. We have a good team that is very driven. We want to show that on Saturday.“

Head coach, Sascha Glass is also ready and raring to go: “We had a good pre-season, now it’s about putting points on the board. We are a promoted side and are playing an established Bundesliga side in Essen. We still want to be brave and confident, and to cause our opponent problems.”
