1. FC Köln have signed Ron-Robert Zieler. The goalkeeper joins from Hannover 96 and will play for his hometown club on loan until the end of the season.
“With Ron, we have found a goalkeeper, who fits exactly in our profile. He brings the quality and the experience that we absolutely need at this position. And he is 100% ready to take on the role, which we defined together: number two, with the aim of wanting to play,” said FC managing director, Horst Heldt.
“It is nice to be back at FC. As the offer came, I didn’t have to think long about it. I had good discussions with Horst Heldt and Andreas Menger and I’m really looking forward to the chance to play in my home city once again,” said Ron-Robert Zieler.
Ron-Robert Zieler was born on 12th February 1989 in Köln and started his playing career at 1. FC Köln. In 2005, he joined the Manchster United youth academy and went on loan to Northampton Town to gain match practice in the 2008-09 season. In 2010, the goalkeeper returned to Germany and established himself as first choice goalkeeper at Hannover 96 in the Bundesliga (185 Bundesliga games) and made the leap into the national team. In 2014, he was part of the World Cup winning squad. In the 2016-17 campaign, he was at Leicester City before returning Germany once more with VfB Stuttgart (68 Bundesliga games). He then made the move to Hannover in summer 2019, playing 31 times for the Lower Saxony side in 2. Bundesliga.
