FC Player of the Season

With the 2018-19 season done and dusted, 1. FC Köln sealed their return to the Bundesliga after finishing in top spot. It wasn’t easy and all players put in their fair share of hard work in order to make it possible. However, the performances of three men have stood out when it comes to the previous campaign. Jhon Cordoba, Dominick Drexler and Simon Terodde are up for the award.

Dominick Drexler: Since arriving in the summer, Drexler has been key in helping FC to realise the promotion goal. He followed up an incredible year with Holstein Kiel last year with an arguably even better season this time around. With nine goals and 18 assists, there hasn’t been much that the 28-year-old hasn’t been involved in. His strong running from deep has helped bring defenders away from the front two, as well as allowing Drexler to find the back of the net with regularity. He is another player that enjoyed a particularly strong run of form towards the end of the campaign, tallying 20 scorer points in the final 19 games.

Jhon Cordoba: What the Colombian has shown this season is quite incredible. After a tough start to the season, Cordoba has come into his own and shown superb mental qualities to come back from a tough first year with FC. Since the game against Dynamo Dresden, he hasn’t been able to be stopped. 18 goals in 21 games (20 overall) has helped push FC through to promotion and top spot, which was crowned by a hat-trick against Greuther Fürth to confirm the title. However, it’s his willingness to go the extra mile that has pushed Cordoba further into the fans’ good books. His ability to run the challenges and cause chaos in the opposition defence hasn’t gone unnoticed by the FC faithful, who have voted him in as Player of the Month on three separate occasions.

Simon Terodde: What more can be said that hasn’t already been said? The man is a goal guarantee. Since the 2. Bundesliga became one division, no-one has ever won the accolade of topscorer more than twice. Simon Terodde has now done that three times in four years for three different clubs. His 29 goals in 33 games put him second in the league’s all-time scoring charts, needing just four more to hold the title alone. Terodde has not only proven his ability in front of goal, but his clever play around the box has also created numerous chances for team-mates and setting up five goals this term.
