U19s stay unbeaten

FC results from the weekend

It was a mixed weekend of results for FC, as good performances were not rewarded. While the under-17s won against FC Schalke 04 and the under-19s drew with VfL Bochum, there were defeats for both the Frauen and the under-21s.

Frauen battle but are beaten at the death

Friday night under the floodlights and live on Eurosport. FC Frauen were part of the weekly FLYERALARM Frauen-Bundesliga top game against Turbine Potsdam. Willi Breuer’s side weren’t phased by the occasion or opposition, and went ahead thanks to Karoline Kohr’s header. However, the game would be level at the interval. A stunning strike from Luca Graf found the top corner from 25 yards.

The second half saw FC continue to have chances and cause problems on the break. However, Potsdam pressure was beginning to tell and Elvira Herzog had to be at her best to deny former FC player, Nina Ehegötz. It looked like FC had secured a deserved point, but Sophie Weidauer pounced on a loose ball following a corner to hand Potsdam all three points.

Goals: 1:0, Karoline Kohr (21’). 1:1, Luca Maria Graf (34‘). 1:2, Sophie Weidauer (89‘).

U21s winning run comes to an end

With the chance to keep up the pressure on SV Rödinghausen Rot-Weiß Essen at the top of the league, Mark Zimmermann’s side went into the game against BVB II full of confidence. However, things didn’t go to plan on Saturday afternoon. With the game heading towards the break without a goal, Steffen Tigges opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time.

Unfortunately, for the under-21s, they never truly got the chance to get going in the second period either. Another untimely goal from Joseph Boyamba less than 10 minutes after the restart meant that they were left with a mountain to climb. A rare afternoon to forget was compounded by Tobias Raschl’s goal, but the under-21s still sit in a comfortable fourth place.

Goals: 0:1, Steffen Tigges (39’). 0:2, Joseph Boyamba (54’). 0:3, Tobias Raschl (85’).

U19s held by Bochum

After defeat in the DFB-Pokal der Junioren to 1. FSV Mainz 05 before the international break, Stefan Ruthenbeck’s under-19s were desperate to get back to winning ways. Up until the break, that looked very much to be the case. A superb finish from Mathias Olesen capped off a fine move and seemed to have them on course to make it five wins from five.

With 15 minutes to go, with FC seemingly set to keep a four-point gap at the top of the table, Bochum found an equaliser. Dzenan Mucic was the man to finally end the under-19s winning run in the league, as he fired past Daniel Adamczyk to earn a share of the spoils for Bochum. Even though they weren’t able to secure a fifth win in a row, Leverkusen’s draw meant that they retained their lead.

Goals: 1:0, Mathias Olesen (31’). 1:1, Dzenan Mucic (76’).

U17s keep on winning

After defeat on the opening day, FC’s under-17s continue to show their real strength as their winning run continued against Schalke on Saturday. Markus Daun’s men got the perfect start inside 20 minutes, as Maximilian Schmid snuck in behind the defence and found a way to fire past the Schalke goalkeeper.

Carlo Kettig had a goal ruled out for offside midway through the first-half, but he wasn’t to be denied in the second. A powerful header from a corner was enough to double the lead and give FC some breathing space. As Schalke went in search of a way back into the game, FC put together a flowing move to kill the game. Maximilian Schmid grabbed his fourth of the season to cap off a superb performance.

Goals: 0:1, Maximilian Schmid (17’). 0:2, Carlo Kettig (57’). 0:3, Maximilian Schmid (75’).
