U19s remain top

FC results from the weekend

Another busy weekend for 1. FC Köln has come and gone. The Frauen put in a brave performance against 1. FFC Frankfurt, though they fell to a 1:0 defeat. The under-21s got the better of SV Rödinghausen in a narrow win, while the under-19s came from behind to beat MSV Duisburg. The under-17s were seconds away from beating Borussia Dortmund, but conceded a last-gasp equaliser.

U21: Table-toppers toppled

1. FC Köln’s under-21s were looking to get back to winning ways on Saturday afternoon against first-placed SV Rödinghausen. The visitors had the first chance of the match, but Vincent Geimer and Kaan Caliskaner were soon causing problems for Rödinghausen. It was the latter who gave FC the lead, heading home a cross from Marvin Rittmüller. Eros Dacaj responded for Rödinghausen, as he saw his cross cannon out off the crossbar.

The second-half was a much more tight and tense affair. FC were trying to move forward but lacked the final pass, while Rödinghausen struggled to get things getting. That changed when a clever exchange on the edge of the box played in Simon Engelmann, but Julian Krahl made a smart save with his feet. Despite Jan Luca Schuler smacking the crossbar late on, one goal proved to be enough for Mark Zimmermann’s men to get back to winning ways.

Goal: 1:0, Kaan Caliskaner 17’.

U19: Late winner

Stefan Ruthenbeck’s side travelled to Duisburg looking to continue their unbeaten streak and extend the run at the top of the table in the process. That was put in immediate danger after 13 minutes, as Ömer Özden fired home from the edge of the box. The goal spurred FC into action and, on his return from injured, Joshua Schwirten finished off a fine team move to restore parity in the game.

After the break, both sides were keen to get the winner in what was proving to be a tight and tense affair. That eventually came in the latter stages, as FC showed why they are top of the table. Bilal-Badr Ksiouar was the quickest to react following pinball from a corner, and he rifled home from close range to ensure all three points were coming back to Köln.

Goals: 1:0, Ömer Özden 13’. 1:1, Joshua Schwirten 34‘. 1:2, Bilal-Badr Ksiouar 83‘.

U17: Equaliser stops FC from going top

With top spot on the line against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday morning, FC came out motivated and took charge. A superb ball over the top from Florian Wirtz sent Philipp Wydra in behind, and the new arrival showed a deft touch to come inside and fire home. Markus Daun’s team were in control in the first-half and could have added to their lead, but the final finish was sadly missing.

Dortmund came out in the second period with more purpose and managed to get level when Mikhail Özden unfortunately put through his own goal. FC did, however, go back into the lead as Florian Wirtz converted from the penalty spot. It looked for all the world that Daun’s team would go top of the table, until an unfortunate deflection wrong-footed the entire FC defence and Tekin Gencoglu was left to fire in unmarked.

Goals: 0:1, Philipp Wydra 13‘. 1:1, Mikail Özden (OG) 57‘. 1:2, Florian Wirtz (PEN) 69’. 2:2, Tekin Gencoglu 80+5’.

Frauen: Battling performance

With the task of travelling to a Frankfurt side that had earned nine of a possible 12 points from their first four games, FC were brave in the game. The team remained defensively strong, sturdy and compact, with Pauline Nelles making her Bundesliga debut at just 17. She was powerless to prevent Verena Aschauer from opening the scoring in the 18th minute, as FC failed to clear their lines.

After that, the game was an even affair as Willi Breuer’s side went in search of an equaliser. The hosts continued to go in search of the goal that would kill the game off but even with captain Peggy Nietgen, FC continued to battle on. Unfortunately for Sabrina Horvat, two late bookings meant that she was given her marching orders in added time. All in all, it was a performance that FC can take many positives from.

Goal: 1:0, Verena Aschauer 24’.
