U19s stay unbeaten

FC results from the weekend

Another weekend has come and gone for 1. FC Köln. The Frauen put in a brave performance against SGS Essen, but came out of the game without reward. The under-19s and under-17s were both held by Borussia Mönchengladbach.

U19: Thielmann keeps the run going

FC under-19s went into their game against Borussia Mönchengladbach as league leaders, and were determined to keep it that way. Despite a few nervy moments at the back for Stefan Ruthenbeck’s side, they were largely in control of the first half. Sebastian Müller had chances to add to his six goals this season, Marvin Obuz sent a bicycle kick narrowly over but Jan Thielmann’s header was the closest they came. Unfortunately for FC, it was superbly kept out by Maximilian Brüll.

After the break, Gladbach were coming forward more and more and were rewarded for their efforts. Mika Schroers took aim from 25 yards and found the far corner, with Daniel Adamczyk helpless. While the visitors had their chances to put the game beyond FC, they couldn’t find the necessary finish. It was then a late corner that gave FC the goal they needed, as Jan Thielmann’s instinctive finish

Goals: 0:1, Mika Schroers 53’. 1:1, Jan Thielmann 87’.

U17: Hard-fought derby draw

1. FC Köln under-17s travelled to Borussia Mönchengladbach in a bid to keep up the battle at the top of the table and maintain their fine form. Markus Daun’s men were without key players in both Florian Wirtz and Philipp Wydra, but started the game well. Jens Castrop hit the post as Vladimir Fadeev also went close in the first half.

For Gladbach, both Moustafa Moustafa and Luca Raul Barata passed up similarly good opportunities in a busy opening period. Castrop again missed an excellent opening to give FC the lead but Tim Luca Zimpel failed to find the target late on for the hosts in what could have easily ended up as a 3:3 draw. With Dortmund failing to win at the weekend, a draw without two key players was a solid result for Daun’s side.

Frauen: Defeat in Essen

After a tough Friday night encounter against VfL Wolfsburg last week, a trip to nearby SGS Essen was on the cards for FC Frauen this time around. Things didn’t go according to plan at the beginning, and Essen found an early opener through Nicole Anyomi. However, Willi Breuer’s side managed to issue a response before the break. Isabelle Linden was fouled in the box, and Karoline Kohr remained cool and calm to slot home from 12 yards.

That parity lasted until six minutes after the restart, when Lena Ostermeier cut the ball back for Turid Knaak to slot home from close range. A third goal came in the 65th minute, as Nicole Anyomi managed to work her way into the box before firing past Elvira Herzog in the FC goal. Meike Meßmer was left hard done by after not getting a penalty late on, as another brave showing went without reward.

With MSV Duisburg picking up a 2:0 win over SC Sand, FC have slipped into the relegation zone. Breuer’s team will face SC Freiburg next week, hoping to get a second home win of the season.

Goals: 1:0, Nicole Anyomi 14’. 1:1, Karoline Kohr (PEN) 35‘. 2:1, Turid Knaak 51‘. 3:1, Nicole Anyomi 65‘.
