Steffen Baumgart’s first game in charge of FC saw him start with a forward-thinking line-up. There was a spot for one new signing in the starting side, as Timo Hübers started alongside Rafael Czichos in defence. Anthony Modeste was partnered by Jan Thielmann in forward areas, after the Frenchman returned from his loan spell in his homeland.
The game began with FC on top and making all the running. Jonas Hector headed over early on before Dimitris Limnios’ strong run ended with him firing off target. The best two chances from an FC perspective fell for Timo Hübers and Anthony Modeste, though neither were able to test André Weis in the Fortuna Köln goal.
The hosts almost opened the scoring when Mike Owusu managed to get in behind the FC back-line, only to see his three team-mates in the middle miss his comeback. The deadlock would be broken before the break, however. A kind bounce of the ball saw Jan Thielmann with the chance to shoot, and he picked out the bottom corner with a strong strike from the edge of the penalty area.
Steffen Baumgart made five changes at the break and, not long later, there was reason to celebrate. Mark Uth and Jan Thielmann pressed well to win the ball back, and the former produced a fine finish from close range to mark his return with a goal. FC had to be alert at the other end, however, as Timo Hübers cleared a Fortuna attack off the line on the hour mark.
The game had opened up and there were openings for both teams, though it would be FC who were the more clinical. Mark Uth was involved again, as Tim Lemperle managed to turn in his teasing cross to add a third. Dominick Drexler capped off a strong second-half showing by converting Kingsley Schindler’s pass, tucking home from 20 yards with a strong curling shot.
FC are in action on Saturday as pre-season picks up pace. Steffen Baumgart’s men take on MSV Duisburg at 17:00 CEST. The game will be streamed live on our YouTube channel.
