A huge deal for FC’s women’s side. The Austrian international, Sarah Puntigam will arrive from Montpellier this summer and be part of the squad next season. The 29-year-old has 118 caps to her name for Austria and is the country’s record appearance maker. She comes with Frauen-Bundesliga experience, having spent four years at both Bayern Munich and SC Freiburg. At Bayern, she managed to win the DFB-Pokal in 2012. Puntigam, who was born in Feldbach, also featured for USV Gnas and LUV Graz as well as SC Kriens.
With Austria’s national team, Puntigam reached the European Championship semi-finals in 2017 before losing on penalties to Denmark. In the Bundesliga, she has featured 96 times to date and scored five goals. She also has 19 DFB-Pokal ties under her belt.
Sarah Puntigam said: “In the discussions I had with Nicole Bender and Sascha Glass, I immediately had a good impression of 1. FC Köln and the vision for the future within women’s football here. FC’s values, for example in terms of diversity and acceptance, mean they are a club where I feel at home. I am looking forward to playing in the Bundesliga again, to see familiar faces and to take over responsibility in a young and talented team. I want to help my new club to build on staying up and take the next step in our development.”
Nicole Bender, Sporting Director, said: “We are proud and pleased that we’ve managed to sign Sarah. She will be one of our leaders, with her superb sporting quality and her experience, so that the younger players can look up to her. She can play at centre-back and in defensive midfield. Her record of 118 caps is incredibly impressive. We imagine that she’ll be part of Euro 2022 in England, we’re crossing our fingers for her and look forward to having her in our team next season.”
