1. FC Köln have strengthened in central midfield for the upcoming season with the arrival of Birger Verstraete. The 25-year-old Belgian joins from Jupiler Pro League outfit, KAA Gent and has signed a four-year deal. The clubs have agreed not to disclose the details of the transfer.

FC managing director, Armin Veh said: “Birger is an intelligent, robust and hard-working player with an eye for a pass, who is at home in central midfield as a defensive player or in a box-to-box role. He was a key player in Gent and can immediately help us with his quality and experience, without being at the end of his development. We’re really pleased that he’s decided to join FC.”

Verstraete featured in 143 games in the top division in Belgium, the play-offs and in the UEFA Europa League, where he managed to score seven goals. After he played through the Belgian national youth set-up, he managed to make his debut for the Red Devils in 2018 against Scotland.

Birger Verstraete said: “The transfer to 1. FC Köln comes at the right time for me. FC are a traditional club with great possibilities, faithful fans, which have an excellent reputation in Belgium. After the talks with the board, it was clear to me that I definitely wanted to make the step to Köln. I’m sure that I’ll get on well here. I can hardly wait to meet my new team-mates and to play my part in FC’s success.”
