Just before the transfer window slammed shut, 1. FC Köln have signed Nikola Soldo. The centre-back arrives from NK Lokomotiva and has signed a deal until 2025.
The Croatian under-21 international has already featured six times in the top tier of Croatian football this season and made 31 appearances last term. The 21-year-old scored twice and set up a further goal.
FC Managing Director, Christian Keller said: “After the injuries and absences, we have decided to make another move on the transfer market. With Nikola, we have an ideal option for our defence. He is technically strong, robust and comes to us having already played this season. Obviously, the move into the Bundesliga is a step up for Nikola. We believe that he can make that jump.”
Nikola Soldo said: “I am really pleased that the move to the Bundesliga and 1. FC Köln came about. It was always my goal to play in Germany at some point, one of the best leagues in the world and where my father played for 10 years. He has already told me a lot about FC. I know that 1. FC Köln is a club with a lot of tradition with many very passionate fans. Just like FC, I also have big ambitions. The philosophy of playing young players is another reason to give everything here. I watched the last few FC games and I know that there is a good team spirit and that the team is like a family. I can barely wait to get into training and get to know my team-mates.”
Nikola Soldo was born on 25th January 2001 in Stuttgart. He is the son of former FC head coach, Zvonimir Soldo and lived in Germany until the age of five before the family moved back to Croatia. The centre-back, who can play on the left or the right, went through the youth academy at Dinamo Zagreb. He made his professional debut in the 2019-20 season for NK Inter Zapresic in the Croatian top tier, against Dinamo. In the course of the season, he quickly became a first-team regular and made 28 appearances before joining NK Lokomotiva.
