Pre-season 2019/20

FC Training Camp Ticker - Day 4: Afternoon off

1. FC Köln are currently in Donaueschingen preparing for the new season. Here's all the important bits from day four.

+++ 8:24am: Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you +++
Best wishes here, best wishes there. At breakfast, the FC team are celebrating two birthdays. Kitman, Frank Almstedt and hat-trick hero from the win against FC Bad Dürrheim, Darko Churlinov, are celebrating their birthdays.

+++ 9:57am: Chat with the fans +++
Some light rain accompanied the players onto the pitch in Donaueschingen. Kingsley Ehizibue was still in high spirits and was all smiles on his way to the pitch. While his team-mates enjoyed a round of pre-training keepie-uppies, Jhon Cordoba spent some time on the bench. He was soon joined by a fan, and the two enjoyed a quick chat before things got underway.

+++ 9:59am: We're underway! +++
Training is up and running. After the 16:0 win the night before, a regeneration session is on the cards. Today, the players are playing football tennis.

+++ 10:41am: Where is the Hawkeye? +++
"You can't be serious?" might be more associated with Wimbledon than Donaueschingen, but Rafael Czichos was doing his best John McEnroe impression during football tennis. Along with Dominick Drexler, they faced off against Vincent Koziello and Jhon Cordoba. As Czichos headed the ball over the net, he thought he had won the point - Andre Pawlak, acting as umpire, had other ideas and called the ball out.

+++ 10:21 Uhr: An old friend has arrived +++
Who's that over there? Midway through the session, a familiar face appeared on the sidelines. It is one that FC fans and the gathered media recognised straight away. Dominique Heintz, his wide, Laura and dog, Mogli had come by to pay a visit.

+++ 10:51am: Finished for the day +++
For the FC players, their day is over. In the afternoon, all that remains are the media appointments. Kingsley Schindler, Kingsley Ehizibue, Rafael Czichos, Simon Terodde, Timo Horn, Birger Verstraete and Anthony Modeste have to wait a little longer before they can enjoy some free-time.

+++ 12:02pm: Birthday cake +++
In the dinner room, Frank Almstedt and Darko Churlinov recieve their birthday cake - naturally, given the area, it's a Black Forest Gateau. The players begin to sing, and afterwards both say thank you. Churlinov said, "Thank you for your birthday wishes. I'm pleased to be in camp with you and I'm really looking forward to this season." Frank Almstedt continued, "We're pleased that we're able to celebrate with our big family."

+++ 2:33pm: Free time +++
On the afternoon off, the players are able to enjoy some time to themselves or with their team-mates. "The team are doing well and the mood is how I'd hoped," said Achim Beierlorzer. "The boys need an afternoon off. They can do what they want - whether that's sleeping or playing golf."

A few FC players will be spending that time around the hotel. Birger Verstraete will spend the time watching the Women's semi-finals at Wimbledon, Jonas Hector went golfing and Noah Katterbach relaxed at the pool after some Fortnite.

+++ 3:00pm: Donations from the FC Foundation +++
The 1. FC Köln Foundation is also in the training camp. The day before, "Stadtmühle" were given €1,800 for four new football nets. Markus Ritterbach handed over the cheque before the game in Bad Dürrheim. Today, executive board member, Stefan Müller-Römer visited St. Michael Donaueschingen, an old people's home, to donate €1,500 to the cause. They will put it towards a home trainer and a football table.
