6:0 win

FC victorious against Viktoria

1. FC Köln came away 6:0 winners against Viktoria Köln on Thursday evening. An own-goal from Dominik Lanius opened the scoring before Marco Höger, Jhon Cordoba and Anthony Modeste gave FC a four-nil lead at the break. A late Simon Terodde brace rounded off the scoring at Sportpark Höhenberg.

Team news

None of the former FC players made the starting line-up as Pavel Dotchev’s exciting 3. Liga outfit welcomed 1. FC Köln to the right-hand side of the Rhein. Dario de Vita was the only ex-FC man in the squad for the team currently sitting in seventh place.

Achim Beierlorzer opted for a rotated side at Sportpark Höhenberg on Friday evening, with the chance to get valuable game time a priority. There was a start for Jan Thielmann at the head of the diamond, as one of the three under-19 players to make it into the squad.

Fast start, four goals

Before the game began, both sides observed a minute of silence for the victims of the terror attack in Halle yesterday. Both sides attempted to come forward in the early stages of the game, and it was Jhon Cordoba who had the first chance of the match. The Colombian dragged wide from the edge of the box before Ismail Jakobs stung the palms of Sebastian Patzler in the Viktoria goal.

There was nothing the home goalkeeper could do in the 11th minute as FC went ahead. Benno Schmitz made a darting run down the right and managed to find a cross into the box. Unfortunately for Dominik Lanius, he was helpless in turning the ball into his own goal. A second arrived five minutes later when Schmitz’s corner was headed home by Marco Höger at the front post.

Things got even better for FC just four minutes later. A fantastic through ball from Höger split the opposition defence and allowed Jhon Cordoba through on goal. Cordoba stayed calm and managed to slot past Patzler with confidence for FC’s third goal. Achim Beierlorzer’s men were in control of the game from there on and a clever free-kick saw Anthony Modeste get on the scoresheet himself.

Slow second period

The second-half began with plenty of changes on both sides, with just Thomas Kessler, Niklas Hauptmann, Vincent Koziello and Jhon Cordoba remaining on the pitch. Kingsley Ehizibue had the first chance of the second half, with the substitute coming inside and shooting narrowly wide of the far post.

A flurry of yellow cards followed for Viktoria as the rhythm in the game was constantly broken up by the substitutions. Vincent Geimer went close for FC as his swerving shot went wide of the upright. The hosts hadn’t lost heart despite the scoreline and a fine stop from Thomas Kessler prevented Simon Handle from reducing the deficit.

As the game began to open up towards the end, FC found more space behind the Viktoria defence. A fine through ball from Niklas Hauptmann picked out the run of Simon Terodde, and a trademark chip saw him make it five. FC’s number nine added a sixth in the final few minutes, bringing down Rafael Czichos’ pass to fire into the roof of the net.

FC are back in action on Sunday 20th October, as they welcomed SC Paderborn 07 to the RheinEnergieSTADION.
