A victory and a defeat

FC win the tournament in Lohne

1. FC Köln won the pre-season tournament on Saturday at the Heinz-Dettmer-Stadion in Lohne because of a greater goal difference. In the first game, Achim Beierlorzer’s side won 3:0 against VfL Osnabrück and in the second fixture, FC were defeated by Werder Bremen 0:1.

At 14:00, 1. FC Köln kicked off the pre-season preparations at the Heinz-Dettmer-Stadion in Lohne against second division side VfL Osnabrück. Brady Scott started in goal with Jhon Cordoba and Kingsley Schindler leading the attack in a 4-4-2 formation.

Three goals against Osnabrück

Achim Beierlorzer’s side started well and created the first opportunity when Cordoba narrowly missed the ball inside the penalty area after seven minutes, unopposed by the opposition goalkeeper. In the tenth minute, FC fans had the first reason to celebrate: Cordoba battled against Nico Granatowski, getting on the end of a cross from Benno Schmitz, firing the ball past the Osnabrück goalkeeper. VFL had a chance to equalise but it was FC who capitalised again. Dominik Drexler latched onto a pass from Louis Schaub and chipped the ball over the onrushing keeper, giving FC a 2-0 lead at half-time.

Following the break, Niklas Hauptmann replaced goalscorer Drexler. FC’s lead was never in danger in the second-half and Kingsley Schindler made it 3-0 with a finish from an acute angle ten minutes from time.

Defeat against Bremen

In the second game of the day, FC named a new starting XI. Using the same system, Timo Horn started in goal with Simon Terodde and Anthony Modeste up front. FC played well from the beginning and created good chances in the opening ten minutes. Terodde tested Jiri Pavlenka while the referee waved away Vincent Koziello’s penalty claim. FC played very well in the first 30 minutes and didn’t concede any chances to Werder Bremen.

In the second-half, FC created less goalscoring opportunities but played well. Four minutes from time, Bremen striker Josh Sargent took advantage of the FC defence to give the opponents a 1-0 lead. Nevertheless, 1. FC Köln won the tournament because Bremen lost 1-0 against Osnabrück.

FC head coach Achim Beierlorzer: “I'm very satisfied. In the first game we didn't allow any chances and against Bremen I was also satisfied. At the end it was a bit annoying that we allowed the ball through because we had the game under control and had a lot of opportunities but as we stand, I am satisfied.”

On Sunday and Monday, the FC players have time off and will travel to Kitzbühel on Tuesday for their second training camp.
