Frank Aehlig, head of football, has informed 1. FC Köln that he will leave the club. The 52-year-old is planning a move to Red Bull Global Soccer on 1st July 2021. Aehlig and the Managing Directors will decide together on a time frame for his departure in the coming weeks.
“This decision was not easy for me. I really enjoy being here at FC, value the close and trusting co-operation with Horst Heldt and Alexander Wehrle and all my colleagues at Geißbockheim. On the other hand, there is an offer that brings an extremely exciting and interesting challenge with it. It gives me the opportunity to work on a new level in professional football,” said Frank Aehlig.
“Frank Aehlig has been a team player since day one. From the beginning, we had a huge challenge to stay in the Bundesliga and then came Corona on top. He supported us more than vigorously, with the transfers last winter, with our great upheaval this summer and with all the issues that we have had to deal with since the beginning of the pandemic in order to keep the first-team running,” said FC Managing Director, Horst Heldt.
“We are reluctant to let Frank Aehlig go. We appreciate his many years of experience in professional football and his meticulous way of working in the background. He also has a network in the industry that is second to none,” said FC Managing Director, Alexander Wehrle, who has been working with Aehlig since January 2018.
Frank Aehlig joined FC from RB Leipzig. Aehlig, who was born in Dresden, was working in Leipzig from 2014 as sport co-ordinator and had previously worked at the likes of 1. FC Kaiserslautern, FC Augsburg and VfL Wolfsburg.
