Thoughts after Hoffenheim

Gisdol: “We’ve got to be consistent over 90 minutes”

Following the 3:1 defeat to Hoffenheim, Markus Gisdol, Toni Leistner and Timo Horn spoke to NetCologne FC-TV about the game.

Timo Horn: “The league is very close together. In that sense, we can be pleased that we’ve got a little bit of a cushion. But we have to work on our tackling and shouldn’t concede as many goals. When you’re 2:0 behind against Fortuna or 3:0 against Hoffenheim, then it is a huge effort to bring yourself back into the game. We didn’t have to lose this game, I didn’t find Hoffenheim so impressive that we couldn’t have taken something. We now have to get back up and go again. As the new coaching staff came in, we said that we believe in ourselves and can stay up. That’s the most important thing. For that, we need a few more points and to play better.”

Markus Gisdol: “We didn’t start well, went behind and then had the red card. Through that, it was a completely different game but we quickly found some structure. Unfortunately, we didn’t manage to grab the equaliser before half-time. In the second-half, we want to pick up where we left off but we conceded two quick goals. After that we had some great chances to turn the game around. The performance with 10 men and then in 10 against 10 was good, also when it comes to the shots. When I look at our performances since the Corona break, I see phases in which we are impressive. But we also have periods where we lose a little bit of concentration. We’ve got to get rid of that. In the Bundesliga, that can’t happen. We have to play consistently for 90 minutes.”

Toni Leistner: “We were asleep at the start, and only woke up after the goal and the red card. We had good passages of play and were putting the tempo in the game. Hoffenheim were sitting a bit deeper and had a few chances on the counter, which weren’t too dangerous. Then we were asleep again after half-time and went 3:0 down only to wake up again. With the penalty, we had a huge chance to bring it back to a goal. If we had scored, the game would have taken on a new course. The first loss since the long break is no reason to put our heads in the sand. We have to stay calm and concentrate on the next game.”
