Heavy defeat in Hoffenheim

TSG Hoffenheim put six goals past 1. FC Köln (6-0) on Bundesliga Matchday 28.

Stefan Ruthenbeck selected the same starting eleven that played in the 2-0 victory against Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

One-sided opening stages

Serge Gnabry was a permanent threat right from the start. First, his delivery just missed Kramaric at the far post (1’). Then the Germany international fired a shot on goal, which Cologne’s in-form keeper Timo Horn had to fist away (5’). 7 minutes into the match, he nearly converted a dangerous Uth volley.

Gnabry’s deserved lead for TSG

The visiting fans cheered wildly for their team when 1. FC Köln won their first corner. Risse swung it in and Höger just missed the top right corner with a well-timed header (18’). The action then went back to the other side, where Gnabry turned several FC defenders and hammered the ball into the back of the net (23’). 6 minutes later Gnabry was denied by an acrobatic Horn save (29’). Following this, FC could not produce more than two chances from their numerous corners, but neither Höger (36’) nor Heintz (38’) could equalize. As a result, Hoffenheim had a deserved lead at the break.

Gnabry increases

Minutes after the two teams had just re-entered the pitch, Gnabry accurately finished into the bottom left corner from 24 yards to double the home lead (47’). Kramaric nearly added another goal, but he missed the post with his header by inches (48’).

TSG decide the match

Hoffenheim were much more target-oriented and the former Cologne player Mark Uth decided the match when he benefited from a great Rupp challenge, who won the ball in Cologne’s build-up (56’). 5 minutes later Rupp also scored and this time Uth served the ball perfectly (61’). Uth also completed his brace: Schulz progressed on the left wing and Uth finally slotted it home (65’). Even substitute Zuber was eventually invited to contribute to the result from another Uth service (72’).

Fight for survival continues against Mainz

In a week 1. FC Köln will face 1. FSV Mainz 05 in one of the most important matches for Ruthenbeck’s men this season. The match will be kicked off on Saturday, 7 April 2018 (15:30).
