FC managing director

Heldt: “We’ll get our points”

FC managing director Horst Heldt spoke on Tuesday about the defeat against Leipzig, the fitness of Jhon Cordoba and Rafael Czichos’ comeback.

Horst Heldt spoke about…

…the 4:2 defeat against Leipzig: “We are annoyed when we lose. No matter who it is against. Despite that, we saw lots of positives. I know who we played against and the quality that they have. In that instance, we did a lot well. We conceded too easily, however. That’s the frustrating thing. Leipzig also took their goals really well. We battled really well – against a team that are in the Champions League quarter-finals for a reason.”

…Jhon Cordoba, who had to be subbed off against Leipzig: “He’s took a knock. We hope that he will be fit again for the game against Augsburg. On Wednesday, we have the day off. Whether or not he’ll be back on Thursday, we will see. It’s sore but shouldn’t be a long-term problem. I believe that he’ll be ready for the Augsburg game.”

…the current gap to the relegation places: “It is doesn’t make sense to be unnerved or to lose our self-confidence. We always found a good measure there. It’s a gap that is good but that isn’t enough. We want to keep taking points, in order to be clear. We have never said anything different. Despite the defeat, I’m still convinced that we will get our points and the gap won’t get any smaller. It is important to remain focused. Against Leipzig, I saw a very focused team who battled to the end. It was a lot better than the performance against Hoffenheim. That makes me optimistic. When we keep our game at that level, we’ll get our points.”

…working out how many points are needed: “Obviously, there is the 40-point rule. But I don’t believe that is necessary in order to sleep easy at night. We still have five games left. There are teams who are below us and have to play against one another. But there are also teams who have to play against top teams like Leipzig. It’s also close at the top of the table. These teams also need their points. For us it is important that we focus on ourselves. As a director, I can look at the other teams but the coaching staff and team should focus on themselves.”

…working off the game against Leipzig: “Working through mistakes is something we do as team and individually. There has already been a meeting, now it’ll go into detail. We always found a good mix between constructive criticism, what we can do better and also focusing on what we did well. It is always important to remain authentic. You can’t sell the team something you don’t believe in yourself.”

…Mark Uth, who was missing against Leipzig due to muscular problems: “I believe that he will be fit again against Augsburg. It is a light strain. I am optimistic, but I’m also not a doctor.”

…Jorge Meré, who started on the bench: “It is not easy, when you sit on the bench and don’t play. Those who aren’t frustrated are in the wrong job. Everyone wants to play as much as possible. Jorge is an absolute sportsman.”

…Rafael Czichos’ comeback: “Rafael has trained for almost 14 days. In the session, there is lots emphasis placed upon the defenders going into tackles. We saw then that Rafa is definitely in a position to play. He has no problems. We then decided to play him. He was a regularly before, he deserved to be playing regularly and was putting in great performances before his injury. Every game after the injury will help him. He will already profit from that in the next game. From my point of view, he did very well. It was a good performance.”

…Anthony Modeste, who scored against Leipzig: “It should give Tony confidence. He did well. The way and how he played was a step in the right direction. He’s strong in the challenges again. If you play against Leipzig, you play at a high level with pace and robustness. No-one has it easy. Tony did very well. It shouldn’t just be the goal but also how he played that gives him confidence. The chance he had to make it 4:3 will annoy him. But it is good, that it annoys him. It’s about keeping going and I’m convinced he will do that. Therefore, he won’t let things drop.”
