Contract to be terminated

Jörg Jakobs departs FC

After five-and-a-half-years, Sport Director Jörg Jakobs will leave 1. FC Köln at the end of the month at his own request.

Sport Director Jörg Jakobs will depart 1. FC Köln at his own request. His contract, which was set to run until June 2018, will be terminated prematurely on 31 January 2018.

“Due to personal reasons, I did not want to plan with FC past the summer. Having said that, it was not an easy decision because this club grew close to my heart in the almost six years that I have been here,” said Jörg Jakobs. “Many thanks especially to all of the great colleagues for the friendly and trusting work together as well as the management for the constructive and understanding talks. I wish 1. FC Köln and its fans all the best in the future, particularly in the chase for Bundesliga survival.”

FC President Werner Spinner states: “Jörg Jakobs assumed responsibility in the summer of 2012 at an all-time low and helped establish a new and positive spirit in the club. We are therefore very happy that we were able to inspire him with the project at 1. FC Köln and wish him good luck and success on his further journey.”

Jörg Jakobs came to 1. FC Köln to begin the 2012/13 season after relegation to the second division and was responsible for the rebuilding of the FC squad and as the director of scouting. As Sport Director, Jakobs successfully restructured the youth academy and facilitated the transition between academy and professional football.

FC General Manager Armin Veh states: “It is not a given that a Bundesliga club can transition its coaching staff from the youth academy to the pros during such a difficult time, all the while maintaining the successful work of the academy. This was possible at 1. FC Köln and speaks for the functioning structures and a good selection of personnel. Both can be attributed to the work of Jörg Jakobs.”

FC Managing Director Alexander Wehrle states: “Jörg Jakobs has done excellent work in various areas in recent years. On behalf of the entire FC team, I would like to thank him very much. We are reluctant to see Jörg Jakobs leave due to his expertise and his nature as a colleague. We regret his personal decision, but it was clear that we had to find a collective solution after he had made his intentions clear.”

1. FC Köln wishes Jörg Jakobs all the best in his future endeavors.
