1. FC Köln and Jorge Meré have agreed upon a mutual termination of the defender’s contract. The 24-year-old joins Club América in Liga MX.
Jörg Jakobs, sporting director, said: “Jorge is a player with big potential. Despite that, he didn’t get the game time he wanted in his position due to the competition for places. His goal is to be a first-team regular and therefore, not for the first time, we discussed a move with him. His decision to move to Mexico is understandable for us. We thank Jorge for his efforts over the last four-and-a-half years and wish him all the best for the future.”
After Jorge Meré’s move, there are now just two centre-backs in FC’s squad. “Due to this reason, we are looking intensively at the transfer market. We have a clear profile for a centre-back and definitely want to strengthen in this position,” explained Jakobs.
Jorge Meré said: “I always felt at home, both at FC and in Köln. In the last four-and-a-half years, I experienced a lot with the team. I am pleased that I could play my part in the promotion back to the Bundesliga and that we stayed in the league in the last two seasons. But my aim is to always play and that is why I decided on a new challenge. I wish my team-mates and Steffen Baumgart all the best and I’ll keep my fingers crossed from Mexico.”
Jorge Meré arrived at 1. FC Köln from Sporting Gijón in summer 2017. The Spanish youth international was under-21 European Champion in 2019. For FC, he made 57 Bundesliga appearances (two goals, one assist) and featured 26 times in the 2018-19 promotion campaign. Overall, he played 96 games for FC.
