Bo Svensson opted for three alterations after Mainz’s successful Pokal trip to VfB Lübeck on Tuesday. Robin Zentner, Dominik Kohr and Lee Jae-sung came in for Finn Dahmen, Leandro Barreiro and Angelo Fulgini.
Steffen Baumgart made one change to the team that started against FC Augsburg last time out. Florian Kainz returned from suspension and to the starting line-up, as he replaced Denis Huseinbasic.
The game began evently matched and looked set to be an entertaining, end-to-end encounter. Lee Jae-sung hit the crossbar with a sublime dipping volley from all of 25 yards to start the match off. FC responded in kind as Linton Maina had two almost identical chances. The first cross from Ondrej Duda and the second from Steffen Tigges left Maina in front of goal but he failed to find the target on both occasions.
From there, things went from bad to worse. Luca Kilian made a mistake on the half-way line and chased Karim Onisiwo back into the box, where the Mainz forward went down under pressure and Dr. Matthias Jöllenbeck pointed to the spot. Marcus Ingvarsten converted but, despite touching the ball twice, was allowed to celebrate despite the laws of the game stating otherwise.
FC would still have a great opportunity to equalise. Steffen Tigges found space in the box but was quickly closed down by Robin Zentner, who snuffed out the shot. Luca Kilian was then given a second yellow card for a second foul on Onisiwo. From there, Mainz took full advantage. Dominik Kohr fired home after his initial effort was blocked and Anton Stach fired home from the edge of the area to further extend Mainz’s lead.
After the break, Mainz continued to dominate with their numerical advantage. FC did came close to a consolation just before the hour mark, after Florian Kainz’s stunning free-kick struck the inside of the post and went clear. Mainz thought they had added to their lead on the hour but VAR correctly ruled out Angelo Fulgini’s effort after a handball from Onisiwo.
As FC began to tire as time went on, Mainz found a fourth and fifth. Aaron Martin curled home a superb free-kick from 25 yards, while Karim Onisiwo cleverly finished to make it five. FC are next in action on Thursday evening against 1. FC Slovacko in the crucial Matchday 5 clash in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
