Training on Wednesday

“Not let ourselves down”

Conditioning and tactical aspects were the main focus on Wednesday as the FC players began gearing up for Saturday’s final match against VfL Wolfsburg.

FC head coach Stefan Ruthenbeck split his team into three groups on Wednesday and occupied just half of the practice pitch. For about 40 minutes the groups took turns facing off against one another on the small-sided pitch. Plenty of fans were in attendance to see their beloved players gear up for the final match of the season. Jhon Cordoba, meanwhile, sat out due to muscular issues.

Saturday’s opponent, VfL Wolfsburg, is in the midst of its own relegation battle. Hamburger SV currently sit in 17th place on 28 points, while Wolfsburg are just one standing above on 30 points. With SC Freiburg on 33 points but a clearly inferior goal difference, Wolfsburg could still secure a safe berth in next season’s Bundesliga competition. Even if Freiburg were to pick up a point, a win against 1. FC Köln would ensure a relegation play-off spot.

FC goalkeeper Timo Horn is approaching the match like any other, even if 1. FC Köln’s fate has already been decided. “We are not playing for Wolfsburg, nor are we playing for HSV. Their respective situations does not matter to us,” said Horn. With about 3,000 FC fans set to make the trip, there will be plenty of motivation for the players to put on a proud display. “We want to play well for the fans. We did not let ourselves down against Munich and we intend to take the same approach on Saturday.”
