DFB-Pokal second round

Number crunch: Away to Saarbrücken

1. FC Köln make the trip south to Völklingen to face 1. FC Saarbrücken in the DFB-Pokal second round. It’s a chance for FC to get back on track after defeat in Mainz.

1. FC’s penalty shoot-out against Wehen Wiesbaden was their fourth in seven years in DFB-Pokal. That was the third win in those four shoot-outs, with the only defeat coming last season against Schalke 04.

2. This is Saarbrücken’s best run in the Pokal since 2013-14, where they reached the last 16 against Borussia Dortmund. It is only the second time they have reached the second round this decade.

3. The teams have met just once in the DFB-Pokal, which came in 2004. Despite Carsten Cullmann’s red card, four goals from a 19-year-old Lukas Podolski helped FC into the next round.

4. No FC player has scored more than four goals in a single DFB-Pokal game. Simon Terodde was the last player to equal Lukas Podolski’s total of four in the first round last season. Christian Timm (vs Wattenscheid, 1999-00), Thomas Allofs (vs Darmstadt 1988-89) and Dieter Müller (vs SW Essen, 177-78) also managed to find the back of the net on four occasions.

5. Overall against Saarbrücken, FC have managed to claim victory on nine of 13 occasions, including four times in Saarbrücken. There has never been a draw between the two sides, and that won’t change on Tuesday evening.

6. FC’s first Bundesliga game came against Saarbrücken on 24th August 1963. Wolfgang Overath and Christian Müller got the goals in the 2:0 win at Ludwigsparkstadion.

7. Dirk Lottner has lead Saarbrücken to the top of the league after 15 games. The last time any FCS team were top of the league after that period of time was in 1991-92. A certain Peter Neururer was the head coach then.

8. FC made it through to the second round of the DFB-Pokal for 12th consecutive year. Achim Beierlorzer will also be hoping to make through to the last 16 for the eighth time in that period.

9. Saarbrücken have dropped just five points in the 15 games thus far. That is the best start in the Regionalliga Südwest since the leagues were restructured in 2012-13. They have broken Kickers Offenbach’s record from 2014-15.

10. Simon Terodde has scored in back-to-back league games in the same campaign for the first time since his run of three games in a row against Arminia Bielefeld, MSV Duisburg and Holstein Kiel (MD25, 26 and 27) last season.
