Match Preview: VfL Wolfsburg

Play for the fans

The final match day of the 2017/18 Bundesliga season will see 1. FC Köln on the road against VfL Wolfsburg. FC’s opponent will be playing for survival in the league.

1. FC Köln has one last chance to give its fans a sense of pride ahead of the summer break. On Saturday FC will travel northeast to face VfL Wolfsburg in the final match of the 2017/18 season. “We want to play a good match for the fans,” says FC goalkeeper Timo Horn. While FC are playing for fans and for pride, survival is on the line for Wolfsburg. Currently in 16th place of the standings, a win would secure at least the play-off spot, and maybe even a direct place in next season’s Bundesliga campaign, depending on the result of the SC Freiburg match.

Ex-FC player Yannick Gerhradt

Yannick Gerhardt is a Cologne kid that moved up the ranks of the 1. FC Köln youth academy. Prior to the start of the 2016/17 season, Gerhardt made the decision to join VfL Wolfsburg. Since then, the youngster has been converted from a central midfielder to a left-back, for which he even earned a call-up to the German national team. Still, he is thinking of nothing else when his old colleagues come to town. “We have to shut out everything that has happened and focus on this match. We have a goal to reach. We have to stay positive. Everything else does not matter. All that matters is Saturday’s match,” said Gerhardt.

FC’s first win

The first meeting between these two sides this season was an important one for FC. It was the last home fixture in the first half of the season. FC had yet to win a match in the league, but a lone goal from Christian Clemens was enough to see off Wolfsburg.

  • Kick off at the Volkswagen Arena on Saturday is scheduled for 15:30.
